Basic edge tune-up
A basic edge tune-up is best for chisels and plane irons that are in generally good shape and just need a little touch up on the primary bevel or the tip of the blade. Many woodworkers choose to use a primary bevel set to a standard angle (often 30 degrees) and then use a secondary or micro bevel that is sharpened one or two additional degrees.
Over time, you might find that sharpening the secondary bevel isn't giving you the same sharpness you are used to. This likely means that your primary bevel is in need of a quick touch up to remove small nicks, square the edge, or remove any convex or concave shaping that has resulted from repeated sharpening.
Full primary bevel regrind
A full primary bevel regrind may be necessary if your blade is severely damaged (large nicks), significantly out of square, has been completely ground down to your secondary bevel angle, or if you are simply looking to change the primary angle of your chisel or plane iron.
New chisel/iron set up
A new chisel or plane iron set up is similar to a full primary bevel regrind but also includes flattening the back of the chisel or plane iron. If you have purchased a new chisel or plane, the back will typically need to be flattened before first use. However, once the back is flattened, you should not have to perform this step again (at least not for a long time).
If you have a chisel or plane iron, and even after sharpening you just can't seem to get those wispy thin shavings you see in woodworking videos, a back that isn't properly flattened may be the culprit.
If you are unsure if your chisel or plane iron back is properly flattened, please don't hesitate to drop it off. We will only do as much work as is needed. In other words, if the back is already flat and all you need is a basic edge tune-up, that is what we will charge you for and not for a full new chisel/iron set up.
